Latitude: Three Years Younger get ready to open Alcove stage

Latitude: Three Years Younger get ready to open Alcove stage

Max Jerry was "fast-tracked" into Three Years Younger after meeting Megan and Charlie Simpson who started the group in 2016. They have been chosen by BBC Introducing to open Sunday's Alcove Stage. Jerry said the reality would not "sink in" until he saw the crowd. The group, who describe themselves as from the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire music scenes, were also joined by Inigo Ayesteran last year.Singer Charlie said: "Me and Megan had been performing for such a long time as a duo and we always had in our head this image of how the song should sound with drums and bass and electric guitar and everything we could think of... we just needed the people to help us make that happen." Steve Bannon: Trump ally guilty of contempt of Congress

Steve Bannon: Trump ally guilty of contempt of Congress

Bannon, 68, was indicted last year over his refusal to co-operate with the congressional committee probing the events leading up to the Capitol riot. The former White House chief strategist is said to have been an unofficial adviser to Mr Trump at the time of the insurrection on 6 January 2021. He faces up to two years in jail and up to $200,000 (£167,000) in fines. Speaking to reporters outside court, Bannon vowed to have the case reversed on what his lawyer called a "bullet-proof appeal". "We may have lost the battle here today, but we're not going to lose this war," he said. His sentencing has been set for 21 October. Lawyers with the US Department of Justice had argued that Bannon felt "above the law" by ignoring a "mand...
The audacious PR plot that seeded doubt about climate change

The audacious PR plot that seeded doubt about climate change

Thirty years ago, a bold plan was cooked up to spread doubt and persuade the public that climate change was not a problem. The little-known meeting - between some of America's biggest industrial players and a PR genius - forged a devastatingly successful strategy that endured for years, and the consequences of which are all around us. On an early autumn day in 1992, E Bruce Harrison, a man widely acknowledged as the father of environmental PR, stood up in a room full of business leaders and delivered a pitch like no other. At stake was a contract worth half a million dollars a year - about £850,000 in today's money. The prospective client, the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) - which represented the oil, coal, auto, utilities, steel, and rail industries - was lookin...

Biden’s doctor: President’s Covid symptoms ‘have improved’

The 79-year-old is experiencing mild symptoms, including a runny nose and fatigue. His doctor says he is responding well to medication. Mr Biden has continued working while in isolation, according to the White House, and on Thursday tweeted that he was "doing great". The president is expected to resume normal duties once he tests negative. An update released on Friday by the president's physician, Dr Kevin O'Connor, noted Mr Biden had a slight fever on Thursday evening that responded well to Tylenol. The president still has an occasional cough, and his pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels remain "entirely normal", Dr O'Connor added. In a Zoom meeting with his economic and energy advisers on Friday, Mr Biden sounded hoarse...
Pope Francis: The pontiff’s ‘pilgrimage of penance’ to Canada

Pope Francis: The pontiff’s ‘pilgrimage of penance’ to Canada

Pope Francis, 85, has called the visit a "pilgrimage of penance", and has said he hopes it will help heal the wrongs done to indigenous people in Canada by the Roman Catholic Church. His itinerary includes stops in the provinces of Alberta and Quebec and the northern territory of Nunavut. Absent from the Pope's visit, however, is a stop in British Columbia, where the discovery last summer of evidence of some 200 unmarked graves on the grounds of a former residential school led to nationwide calls for reconciliation. The Pope will be in Canada until Friday. Why is the Pope visiting? Canada has grappled with the path to reconciliation - repairing the relationship between indigenous people, non-indigenous people and the government - in rece...
Tunisia referendum: President Kais Saied seeks mandate to extend powers

Tunisia referendum: President Kais Saied seeks mandate to extend powers

President Kais Saied Saied clearly feels that he is a man of destiny. Although his authoritarian streak is neither unique nor new to Tunisia or the region, his academic credentials and rhetorical style separate him by a long distance from all other Arab autocrats. Delivering his speeches in impeccable classical Arabic, often adlibbed, at a considered pace, the former law professor conveys a sense of a man who weighs his words carefully, with clear focus and vision and ironclad determination. Despite mounting criticism both at home and abroad since he assumed total power in Tunisia a year ago, he has continued undeterred to his, and his alone, desired destination. This may very well be part of his appeal to many Tunisians. Tunisia was the birthplace of t...
