Warwick University professor goes missing during Chile research trip

Prof Tom Marsh, a University of Warwick academic from Rugby, had been visiting La Silla Observatory in Chile. He was last spoken to on Friday evening. Warwickshire Police said it was liaising with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Interpol, and Chilean authorities. The 60-year-old's family said they were "deeply concerned". In a statement issued through the Warwickshire force, relatives said: "We are deeply concerned for Tom and miss him, and would ask anyone who may have information on his whereabouts to please help." Specialist police officers were supporting the family, police said. Prof Marsh is described as white, approximately 6ft 3ins, with balding grey hair and a beard. He was likely to have been wea...

Ukraine war: Russians flee to border after military call-up

President Vladimir Putin announced a partial military mobilisation on Wednesday, which could see 300,000 people summoned to serve in the war. The Kremlin says reports of fighting-age men fleeing are exaggerated. But on the border with Georgia, miles-long queues of vehicles have formed including men trying to escape the war. One man, who did not want to be named, told the BBC's Rayhan Demytrie he had grabbed his passport and headed to the border, without packing anything else, immediately after President' Putin's announcement - because he fell into the group that could potentially be sent to the war. Some witnesses estimated the queue of cars at the Upper Lars checkpoint to be some 5km (3 miles) long, while another group said it had taken se...
Are Mar-a-Lago and other Trump-owned properties over-valued?

Are Mar-a-Lago and other Trump-owned properties over-valued?

Attorney General Letitia James sued Mr Trump and three of his adult children on Wednesday, on claims they engaged in years of financial fraud to secure favourable loans, tax benefits and other economic advantages. Mr Trump has denied any wrongdoing, slamming the civil suit brought by the Democrat as "another witch hunt". The lawsuit alleges misconduct across nearly two dozen Trump-owned properties in the US and overseas, many of them well-known. They include New York City's Trump Tower, where the family business is headquartered, and the sprawling Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that the ex-president now calls home. Here is a closer look at some of the claims made by Ms James' office: Trump International Golf Links IMAGE SOURCE...

Ukraine war: ‘What’s happening in Russia now is total fear’

On city buses, electronic displays flick between announcing their destination and declaring "love" for Ukraine with little hearts. This week Lithuania - together with Latvia, Estonia and Poland - banned all Russian tourists, arguing they should not be enjoying democracy and freedom in Europe while their government attacks those very values in Ukraine. The move has raised concerns among Russian opposition activists already abroad. "It's strange to ban people for being Russian, whether or not they support Putin's regime," argues Anastasia Shevchenko, an activist who spent two years under house arrest for protesting against the Russian president. When Russia invaded its neighbour, she was serving a suspended sentence and one wrong move, even an ...

Queen Elizabeth II leaves complex legacy for Aboriginal Australians

"As a kid, I grew up looking at her in an aspirational way and thinking: 'Gosh, that's the Queen! And that's my dad receiving an [MBE] order from the Queen!'" the Aboriginal Australian television presenter says. "She's someone that I always looked up to." But as Ms Jacobs grew older, the meaning of the photo shifted. When she looks at it now, she sees a sovereign standing in front of a man who dedicated his life to having the sovereignty of his own people recognised. "And he died waiting for that recognition," the Whadjuk Noongar woman tells the BBC. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have spoken of complicated emotions after the Queen's death. The oldest continuing cultures on Earth, they suffered great...
UK considering options after access to EU research scheme stalls

UK considering options after access to EU research scheme stalls

The UK has been seeking to access Horizon Europe, the EU's €95.5bn (£81.2bn) scientific funding programme, since it left the EU. The government said the EU "continues to decline this request" . A meeting on Thursday ended in deadlock. The European Commission has been approached for comment. Britain's continued participation was agreed in principle under the Trade and Co-operation Agreement, the post-Brexit trade deal. This participation has never been ratified. The government has accused the EU of breaching its treaty obligations over Horizon but Brussels says there was no "precise deadline" to finalize access. The delays are due to an ongoing dispute about post-Brexit arrangements for Northern Ireland. IMAGE SOURCE,...
