Kashmir: Films return to big screen after 23 years

Movie theatres are set to reopen in Indian-administered Kashmir for the first time in more than two decades. Moazum Mohammad and Abid Bhat report on the return of the cinema to the conflict-torn region - and what it means for the people. The foyer of the INOX multiplex in Kashmir's main city of Srinagar is filled with the region's crafts - intricate wood carvings on the ceiling and doors and a theatre logo made of papier-mâché. "It took us four years to reach this day," says Vikas Dhar who, along with his father, has partnered with the multiplex chain to open the cinema complex in the region. It was no ordinary task - the Dhar family demolished an eight-room guest house to make way for the four-storey multiplex. An inaugural screening was hel...

Krakow cancels Roger Waters gigs, urges him to visit Ukraine

WARSAW, Poland -- The Polish city of Krakow cancelled gigs by Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters because of his sympathetic stance toward Russia in its war against Ukraine, a local councilman said Monday, inviting the singer to visit Ukraine with him to see the extent of Russian crimes. Councilman Lukasz Wantuch said the city owns the arena where two of Waters' concerts had been scheduled for April before being canceled. He said the city would not tolerate them being used for an artist spreading ideas objectionable to most people in Poland. And he said Waters was free to perform in a private venue if he wishes. “He doesn’t realize the truth,” Wantuch told The Associated Press. “He doesn’t understand what is going on in Ukraine.” Polish media on Saturday had reported that the gigs were c...
Senate stumbles toward government shutdown with impasse over energy policy

Senate stumbles toward government shutdown with impasse over energy policy

Congress has just three legislative days remaining to avert a fast-approaching government shutdown at the end of the week, and much of its ability to keep the government running will depend upon whether lawmakers can navigate an impasse over energy policy. In the few days that remain, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will try to lead the Senate in passage of a short-term funding bill that is expected to include Sen. Joe Manchin's energy permitting reform legislation. Schumer struck a deal with Manchin to include energy permitting reform, a top priority for the West Virginia moderate Democrat, on a must-pass piece of legislation before the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30 in order to secure Manchin's crucial support for Democrats' keystone Inflation Reduction Act. But with the passa...
Bank of England fails to reassure markets after pound plunge

Bank of England fails to reassure markets after pound plunge

LONDON -- The Bank of England sought to reassure financial markets after the British pound touched an all-time low against the U.S. dollar Monday, but its entreaty fell flat for investors concerned about a sweeping package of tax cuts that further jolted a faltering economy that the government’s plan was meant to prop up. The central bank said it was “closely monitoring’’ the markets and would not hesitate to boost interest rates to curb inflation. Its statement came after the pound plunged as low as $1.0373, the lowest since the decimalization of the currency in 1971, on concerns that tax cuts announced Friday by Treasury chief Kwasi Kwarteng would swell government debt and fuel further inflation as the United Kingdom teeters toward recession. The bank, which raised rates Thursday, said...
Greece: EU using Med countries like a refugee ‘parking lot’

Greece: EU using Med countries like a refugee ‘parking lot’

ATHENS -- Greece on Monday urged the European Union to lift movement restrictions for refugees recognized by individual nations, accusing the bloc of applying a double standard when dealing with Ukrainians fleeing the war compared with the victims of other conflicts. Notis Mitarachi, Greece's migration affairs minister, said a “lack of solidarity” was holding up efforts to comprehensively reform migration rules across the 27-nation bloc. Refugees granted international protection by EU nations currently cannot take full advantage of the bloc’s provisions for free movement. But Ukrainians escaping the Russian invasion of their country face fewer restrictions. “That is not fair, and Greece will insist on that point ... the Ukrainian arrangement should apply to all refugees as long as they ...
Cargo traffic movement resumes between Colombia, Venezuela

Cargo traffic movement resumes between Colombia, Venezuela

BOGOTA, Colombia -- Trucks loaded with aluminum and medications crossed a bridge linking Colombia and Venezuela for the first time in seven years Monday following restoration of diplomatic relations, giving regional businesses hope for growing trade. Colombia's new leftist President Gustavo Petro, who took office in August and quickly moved to reestablish ties with Venezuela’s government, was on hand as the trucks rolled across the Simon Bolivar International Bridge between Cucuta, Colombia, and San Antonio, Venezuela. It was once one of the busiest crossings between the two South American nations. Residents of border areas and business owners in both countries expect the resumption of cargo traffic to generate jobs and reduce the thriving illegal commerce. “Hopefully, we can reactivate...
