Leonardo DiCaprio lauds birth of bison calf in Canterbury

Leonardo DiCaprio lauds birth of bison calf in Canterbury

European bison were released into woodland near Canterbury in July as part of a rewilding project to help restore the area to its natural state. The Hollywood star shared an image of the bison to his 55.6 million Instagram followers. It was the first bison to be born in the UK wild in thousands of years. The actor - who describes himself as an environmentalist - frequently uses his social media platform to comment on issues related to climate change. In the post, DiCaprio describes the animals as "ecosystem engineers" as, through their natural behaviour, "create light and space for other wildlife to thrive." Bison clear undergrowth, allowing other plants and insects to move in. They also de-bark conifers, allowing native ...
World Cup: Songs help partially-sighted Wales fan enjoy games

World Cup: Songs help partially-sighted Wales fan enjoy games

Wales being the Land of Song has an extra special meaning for one fan - who is experiencing the World Cup through music. Cai Emlyn Davies lost most of his sight when he was nine and is not able to follow the action clearly on the pitch. So it was the euphoria that resonated in the stands that told him Gareth Bale nailed the equaliser against the USA. For Cai, Wales as a footballing nation goes hand-in-hand with it being a musical one as well. As much as it is about the exploits on the pitch, it is about the goose bumps of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and the raw emotion of Yma O Hyd. It is about the music of the Barry Horns and the Red Wall singing Calon Lan, Don't Take Me Home or Men of Harlech that connects him to the action. ...

World Cup: Wales supporter, 62, dies in Qatar

Kevin Davies, 62, from Pembrokeshire, was in Doha with his son and friends. BBC Wales has been told Mr Davies died of natural causes on Friday but he was not at the stadium to watch Wales' 2-0 defeat by Iran. His family is being offered UK consular assistance, with support from Football Supporters' Association Cymru which is helping fans at the tournament. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it was "supporting the family of a British man who has died in Qatar". The Football Association of Wales (FAW) tweeted to say its thoughts were with Mr Davies's family and friends at this sad time and said that it would help in whatever it could. Chief Executive Noel Mooney said: "So sorry to hear that one of our suppor...

The American singer and actress was best known for her title track in the 1980 film Fame, as well as co-writing and singing the smash hit Flashdance... What a Feeling, for which she won an Oscar and a Grammy. She later starred in films opposite Clint Eastwood and Tatum O'Neal. Cara's publicist, who announced her death, said she died at home in Florida but the cause is "currently unknown". Born in 1959 in the Bronx, New York City, Cara was the youngest of five children and started her career on Spanish-language TV. Her father was Puerto Rican and her mother, Cuban-American. Having recorded music as a child, both in Spanish and English, she went on to appear in a number of on-and-off Broadway musicals. But it was in 1980 that Car...
World Cup 2022: ‘Where there is Lionel Messi, there is hope for Argentina’

World Cup 2022: ‘Where there is Lionel Messi, there is hope for Argentina’

Argentina's vast support gathered in their thousands at Qatar's Energy City adjacent to the vast Lusail Stadium with only one man on their minds as they faced World Cup jeopardy. Lionel Messi has carried the hopes of this football-mad nation for most of his career but there was an added layer of tension as Argentina confronted old rivals Mexico in an ear-splitting atmosphere on the stage that will host the final. Argentina knew defeat would effectively end their World Cup after two games following the embarrassment of the loss to Saudi Arabia in the opener. Messi knew this would mean the major honour that has eluded his grasp in a glittering career would be forever out of reach. Messi was, once again, shouldering the burden of Argentina's expectations - and once again ...

Deadly landslide tears through Italian island of Ischia

A number of people are feared to have been killed after a mudslide triggered by heavy rains swept away homes on the island of Ischia, near Naples. The torrent of mud and debris dislodged trees, engulfed buildings and dragged cars into the sea as it reached the coast early on Saturday. The body of a woman was reported to have been found under the mud, and several other people are still missing. Dozens of homes are cut off, with bad weather hampering rescuers. Resident Lisa Mocciaro told Ansa news agency: "We started hearing loud thunder at about 03:00 (02:00 GMT), then the first landslide came down, followed by a second one around 05:00. It was horrifying." Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told reporters the situation was "very...
