Elon Musk has lashed out at a prominent YouTuber and gaming commentator after he accused the billionaire of cheating at video games.
Earlier this week, content creator Zack Hoyt, better known as Asmongold, accused Musk of having other people play games under his name to boost his public rankings.
Hoyt, among other gamers, thought it would be impossible for Musk to reach level 97 on Path of Exile 2 while running several companies.
In the videos Musk has streamed of himself playing Path of Exile 2, gamers have noted he didn’t seem anywhere near good enough at the game to reach that high ranking.
“I’m completely convinced he didn’t play the character,” Asmongold said in his YouTube channel.
In response to the video, Musk took a jab at the streamer on the social media platform he owns, X.
“Asmon behaves like a maverick ‘independent’, but in reality has to ask his boss for permission before he can do anything. He is not his own man,” Musk wrote.
“I’m on hundreds of streams on YouTube/Twitch playing live with the world’s best players.
“No other way to say this, but, while Asmon IS good at caustic commentary and making fun of people, he is NOT good at video games.”
Musk then posted a screenshot of direct messages sent between him and Hoyt that referenced his “editors”.
Hoyt said in a followup video that Musk seemed to confuse video editors with “editors” in a journalistic sense.
Posting screenshots of direct messages without the consent of the sender is a breach of X’s terms of service.
But as the owner of X, Musk is not bound by the company’s rules.
Hoyt also briefly lost his verified status on X without explanation.
Musk has an estimated net worth of A$671 billion, making him the richest person in the world.
