Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office says Trump meeting cancellation ‘understandable’

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's office says it is "understandable" his face-to-face meeting with Donald Trump was cancelled, after the White House said the US president would be leaving the G7 summit in Canada early. "President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X. "Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the G7. (Alex Ellinghausen) Albanese was set to meet Trump on the sidelines of the G7 this week, but the timing of Trump's departure now means it will not go...

Russia may attack Nato in next four years, German defence chief warns

Members of the Western alliance Nato need to prepare for a possible attack from Russia within the next four years, according to Germany's chief of defence. General Carsten Breuer told the BBC that Russia was producing hundreds of tanks a year, many of which could be used for an attack on Nato Baltic state members by 2029 or even earlier. He also insisted that Nato, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, remains unified over the war in Ukraine, despite differences of opinion expressed recently by both Hungary and Slovakia. Gen Breuer was speaking on the sidelines of the Shangri-la Dialogue, a defence summit in Singapore organised by the think tank International Institute of Strategic Studies. His comments come weeks ahead of a summit of Nato nations at The Hague where they are ...

Ukraine drones strike bombers during major attack in Russia

Ukraine says it completed its biggest long-range attack of the war with Russia on Sunday, after using smuggled drones to launch a series of major strikes on 40 Russian warplanes at four military bases. President Volodymyr Zelensky said 117 drones were used in the so-called "Spider's Web" operation by the SBU security service, striking "34% of [Russia's] strategic cruise missile carriers". SBU sources earlier told BBC News it took a year-and-a-half to organise the strikes, which involved drones hidden in wooden mobile cabins, with remotely operated roofs on trucks, brought near the airbases and then fired "at the right time". Russia confirmed Ukrainian attacks in five regions calling them a "terrorist act". Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported a massive overnight drone and ...

King’s invite to Canada sends a message to Trump – and the world

AFP/Getty Images In his first move after his historic election win, Prime Minister Mark Carney invited the King to Canada A decade ago, a portrait of the British monarch caused a row in Canadian politics. Now, the King is being invited to deliver the Speech from the Throne. What's changed? In 2011, shortly after forming a majority Conservative government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper caused a national uproar when he sought to emphasise Canada's ties to the British monarchy. In one example, he replaced two artworks by a Quebec painter with a portrait of the Queen. Some rebuked the gesture as being out of touch with modern times. Canada has, throughout its 157-year-old history, sought increasing independence from the British monarchy, while still remaining a part of the ...

King’s big moment in Canada after Trump row

Reuters The King is visiting Canada after President Trump said it should be part of the US "This is a big deal for the King to do this," says Jeremy Kinsman, former Canadian high commissioner to the UK, as King Charles prepares for a historic visit showing support for Canada, which is facing pressure from US President Donald Trump. "I hope that Trump understands," says Mr Kinsman, ahead of the King becoming the first monarch to open Canada's Parliament in almost 70 years. So what can we expect from his speech as Canada's head of state, to be delivered in French and English in Ottawa on Tuesday? It will be written on the advice of Canada's government. But along with the workaday lines on policy plans, Mr Kinsman expects a message, loud and clear, that Canada will not be...

Trump threatens 50 per cent tariffs on EU and 25 per cent penalties on Apple as his trade war intensifies

US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened a 50 per cent tax on all imports from the European Union as well a 25 per cent tariff on Apple products, unless iPhones are made in America. The threats, delivered over social media, reflect Trump's ability to disrupt the global economy with a burst of typing as well as the reality that his tariffs have yet to produce the trade deals he is seeking or the return of domestic manufacturing he has promised voters. The Republican president said he wants to charge higher import taxes on goods from the EU, a long-standing US ally, than from China, a geopolitical rival that had its tariffs cut to 30 per cent this month so Washington and Beijing could hold negotiations. US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened a 50 per cent t...
