Spread of abortion restrictions in South puts pressure on Virginia

Spread of abortion restrictions in South puts pressure on Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — South Carolina became the latest state to move toward a near total abortion ban Wednesday with legislation that if enacted would leave Virginia an outlier in the South as a place where women have unrestricted access to abortions amid a rapid rise in restrictions in the year since Roe v. Wade was overturned. South Carolina is among the last bastions in the region for those seeking legal abortions, but that status could end soon. Access would be almost entirely banned after about six weeks of pregnancy — often before women know they’re pregnant — under the bill that now must pass the state Senate, which previously rejected a proposal to nearly outlaw abortions but could give final passage next week. And most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy will be banned in North...

Photo of Biden was altered to suggest he touched a child inappropriately

CLAIM: A photo shows President Joe Biden touching a child inappropriately below the waist. AP’S ASSESSMENT: Altered photo. The photo was digitally altered to make it appear as if Biden’s hands were under the child’s shirt. The original photo, which was taken by an Associated Press photographer in 2021, shows the child stretching their shirt to show the president, who is pointing at the shirt in return. THE FACTS: Social media users are sharing a manipulated photo to suggest Biden inappropriately touched a child below the waist. The altered photo appears to show Biden kneeling in front of a child, with his hands underneath the kid’s gray shirt. The photo was shared on Instagram on Sunday with a caption above the photo that reads, “This is what people ‘voted’ for?” Social media users hav...

Norwegian officer found guilty of negligence over sinking of Navy frigate

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The duty commander of a Norwegian Navy frigate that sank following a collision with an oil tanker in 2018 was found guilty of negligence Monday by a Norwegian court. The unidentified officer was given a 60-day conditional sentence by the Hordaland district court. He had denied the charge. ”He is disappointed with the outcome,” the lawyer for the 33-year-old officer, Christian Lundin, told Norwegian news agency NTB. NTB said the officer had been on duty for eight minutes on Nov. 8, 2018, when the 134-meter (442-foot) KNM Helge Ingstad collided with the Maltese-flagged oil tanker Sola TS, tearing a large hole in the frigate’s side in a harbor in Sture, north of Bergen. The frigate’s 137 crew were evacuated before the vessel sank. Eight people were slightly inju...

Mom of Virginia boy who shot teacher takes responsibility

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Four months after a 6-year-old Virginia boy shot and wounded his teacher as she taught class, an attorney for the boy’s mother said it still is not clear how the boy got the gun. Police have said Deja Taylor legally purchased the gun used in the Jan. 6 shooting and Taylor’s attorney, James Ellenson, has said she believed her gun was secured on a high closet shelf with a trigger lock. In an interview ABC’s “Good Morning America” aired Wednesday, Ellenson said no one knows how he got it. “People have talked to him about that, but I don’t know that any adult knows exactly how he got the gun,” Ellenson said. Taylor said her son has ADHD and while attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder might affect others mildly, she described her son as “off the wall,” saying he “...

Poland reverts to historic name for Russia’s Kaliningrad

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland is reverting to using its historical name for Kaliningrad, the Russian city and administrative region that sits on its border. From now on, it will be designated on Polish maps as Krolewiec, based on the recommendation of the government commission for geographic names abroad. The Kremlin has reacted angrily: spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called it a “process bordering on insanity,” going beyond Russophobia. The city, formerly known as Koenigsberg, was ceded from Germany to the Soviet Union after World War II. In 1946, it was renamed Kaliningrad, after Mikhail Kalinin, one of the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution. The Polish authorities point out that Kalinin was one of six Soviet officials who ordered the execution of more than 21,000 Polish prisoners of war...

King Charles III will be the 40th British monarch to be crowned at Westminster Abbey in central London since 1066. While nearly all have been recorded in art and literature, only a handful have been photographed. Edward VII in the early 20th century was the first monarch to be photographed during his coronation. Here are photographs of him and his successors, King George V, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, during their coronations. King Edward VII The coronation for the elderly monarch and his wife Queen Alexandra was scheduled for June 26, 1902, but three days before it was due to take place, he had an emergency operation for a stomach abscess.
