New asteroid photobombs Webb telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope has observed its smallest cosmic object to date — a previously unknown asteroid about the size of the Colosseum in Rome. A team of European astronomers made the detection of the space rock, which is between 100 to 200 metres long, and located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The doughnut-shaped belt is home to most of the asteroids in the solar system. Nursing home resident wakes up in funeral home after being declared dead

A nursing home resident woke up in a funeral home two hours after being pronounced dead in the US state of Iowa. The 66-year-old woman was in the care of the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Centre in Urbandale when she was declared dead on January 3. A report from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Health division detailed how the woman had been admitted into hospice care two weeks earlier suffering from end-stage early onset dementia. An unnamed staff member at the centre reported at 6am on January 3 that the patient's eyes were open, but wasn't breathing and had no pulse. A licenced practical nurse also examined the woman and found no sign of life. The on-call hospice nurse and the woman's family were then told about the death. By ...

What happened to ‘unicorn puppy’ and does tail on his forehead wag?

In 2019, the world's collective heart was warmed by a rescue pup who happened to have a tail growing out of its forehead. Narwhal, the so-called "unicorn puppy" was a biological marvel that drew adoption offers from all over the world. But not all the messages sent to the rescue shelter in Missouri were kind. Inside the hunt for a serial kidnapper, and a bloody finale

American police in rural southwest Oregon were on high alert: A man with a history of kidnapping and torturing women in two states was on the run in their territory. When a tip came in from a cab company that had given him a ride, they went house-to-house to check on residents. Peering through a window of one home, they found a gruesome scene: the bodies of two men who had been beaten to death. The discovery on Tuesday near Grants Pass, Oregon, was a bloody link in a chain of dramatic events that ended hours later with the suicide of the wanted man, 36-year-old bartender Benjamin Obadiah Foster. Law enforcement officers aim their weapons at a home during a standoff in Grants Pass on Tuesday. Bartender Benjamin Obadiah Foster was holed up inside the crawlspace of t...

50-car train derailment causes massive fire, prompting evacuations in Ohio

A massive fire broke out after a train derailed in northeastern Ohio near the Pennsylvania state border in the US on Friday night (Saturday AEDT). The big blaze led officials to issue evacuation and shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents. About 50 cars derailed in East Palestine as a train was carrying a variety of freight from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania, rail operator Norfolk Southern said in a statement Saturday (Saturday night AEDT). There was no immediate information about what caused the derailment. No injuries were reported. Firefighters have been pulled from the immediate area and unmanned stream devices are being used protectively while crews try to determine which cars are still actively burning, village officials said in a separate ...

Chile wildfires leave at least 22 people dead, officials say

At least 22 people have died in connection to widespread forest fires in south-central Chile, according to government officials. There are 1,429 people in shelters, 554 injured and 16 suffering severe burns who are in serious condition, she said.
