Trump warns Russia he may send Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles if Moscow doesn’t settle war soon

President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Russia that he may send Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles if Moscow doesn't settle its war there soon — suggesting that he could be ready to increase the pressure on Vladimir Putin's government using a key weapons system. "I might say, 'Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I'm going to send them Tomahawks," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Israel. "The Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, very offensive weapon. And honestly, Russia does not need that." Floods trap people in cars in Spain’s Catalonia region

BBC Floods caused by torrential rain have left a number of people trapped in vehicles in Spain's north-eastern Catalonia region, officials say. Videos on social media have emerged showing torrents of muddy water sweeping through the towns of La Ràpita and Santa Bàrbara in the Tarragona province, and moving everything in their path. The highest red alert has been declared in the coastal province by Spain's national weather agency AEMET. So far there have been no reports of any deaths or injuries. Catalonia's Civil Protection agency urged residents in Tarragona's Ebro Delta to stay indoors, as AEMET warned of 180mm (7in) of rain in 12 hours in the area. "The situation is complicated, and more rain is forecast," Cristina Vicente, a senior official at the agency, was qu...

US Supreme Court rejects appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, imprisoned former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein

The US Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, the imprisoned former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein. On Monday (early Tuesday AEDT), the first day of their new term, the justices declined to take up a case that would have drawn renewed attention to the sordid sexual-abuse saga after President Donald Trump's administration sought to tamp down criticism over its refusal to publicly release more investigative files from Epstein's case. Lawyers for Maxwell, a British socialite, argued that she never should have been tried or convicted for her role in luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein, a New York financier. Why is Trump trying to deploy the National Guard to US cities?

Getty Images National Guard troops deployed in Washington, DC in September stand guard outside Union Station. President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard into several US cities has drawn a round of legal challenges by state and local officials. Trump argues the use of federal troops is necessary to quell violence in Democratic-controlled cities, crack down on crime and support his deportation initiatives. But several Democratic governors have pushed back, saying the deployments are unnecessary and risk escalating tensions. Illinois filed a lawsuit on Monday asking a judge to block the deployment of troops to Chicago, while a federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked the deployment of National Guard members from Texas and California to Portland, Oregon. ...

France in fresh political crisis as PM Lecornu quits after 26 days

France is facing further political chaos after the country's latest prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, resigned after just 26 days in the role. Hours after quitting, Lecornu accepted a request from French President Emmanuel Macron to work on a plan for the "stability for the country" by Wednesday evening. That unexpected twist capped a day of political upheaval which saw stocks fall sharply on the Paris exchange amid concerns over the political parties' ability to tackle the country's economic woes. Lecornu's shock resignation on Monday morning came the day after he unveiled his cabinet, and made him the third French PM to leave office since last December. His ministerial line-up had been fiercely criticised across the board by parties in the National Assembly, which threatened...
