Iran says draft deal with US would reopen Hormuz shipping, end naval blockade

Iran's state TV says it has obtained a draft of an initial, unofficial framework for a memorandum of understanding with the US on ending their conflict. Under the framework, Iran would restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within a month, while the US would withdraw military forces from Iran's vicinity and lift a naval blockade. State TV said the framework, which excludes military vessels and envisages Iran managing ship traffic through the strait in cooperation with Oman, was not yet finalised and that Tehran would take no steps without "tangible verification". Trump’s handpicked candidate may cost his party their most important state

Republicans are fretting that a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump may cost them in their most important state. Ken Paxton has claimed the nomination as the Republican Senate candidate in Texas, beating long-time incumbent John Cornyn. His comfortable win this morning over Cornyn comes after Trump threw his support behind Paxton last week after a bitter and expensive primary election. Ken Paxton lost his vision in one eye in a hide-and-seek mishap when he was 12. (AP) But Paxton has been so scandal-prone that it could give Democrats an opening in the conservative state. As Texas attorney-general, his own staff reported him to the FBI with bribery and corruption accusations. Paxton then fired the whistleblowers. He was impeached by the state House of R...

Meta's previously-reported 8000-strong job cuts have begun to roll out around the world, with affected employees being notifed from 4am in their local time zones. US charges Cuban ex-leader over 1996 plane attacks

US federal prosecutors overnight announced charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro in the 1996 downing of civilian planes flown by Miami-based exiles as the Trump administration escalated pressure on the island's socialist government. The indictment was related to Castro's alleged role in the shootdown of two small planes operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue. Castro, now 94, was Cuba's defence minister at the time. The charges included murder and destruction of an aeroplane. "For nearly 30 years, the families of four murdered Americans have waited for justice," acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in Miami at a ceremony to honor those killed. "They were unarmed civilians and were flying humanitarian missions for the rescue and protection of people ...

Standard Chartered chief executive Bill Winters told reporters this week there would be job "reductions in favour of machines, and that will accelerate as we go forward into AI (artificial intelligence)". "It's not cost-cutting," Winters said. Standard Chartered chief executive Bill Winters is planning to shed some of the company's "lower-value human capital".
