‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ helps raise awareness of, show support to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault

ENID, Okla. — Registration is open for YWCA of Enid’s annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes has been occurring in Enid since 2014 as a way to help bring awareness to and to show support for people experiencing domestic abuse and sexual assault. Courtney Strzinek, executive director of YWCA Enid, said Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is based on the old adage that “you can’t really understand what someone Hey Dudes Shoes has been through until you’ve ‘walked a mile in their shoes.’” One-in-three women and one-in-six men will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime, according to YWCA, and in 2020, law enforcement agencies investigated 2,245 rapes across Oklahoma. “This is a way to really engage everyone in our mission,” Strzinek said, “bec...
The Barefoot Equine Athlete: Big Shoes To Fill?

The Barefoot Equine Athlete: Big Shoes To Fill?

Two Swedish show jumpers at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics flashed their bare feet over each fence. H&M All In and teammate King Edward, ridden by Peder Fredricson and Henrik von Eckermann, respectively, jumped their way to team gold—and they did so without shoes. Since then, these high-profile success stories have tilted the spotlight toward a growing trend in the sport horse world, where more steeds are “going Swedish,” shedding their shoes and taking to the competition ring in naught but their hoof horns.   And it’s no wonder. These horses showed all the benefits of a barefoot lifestyle. They even got the full backing of the veterinary board at the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). “If it’s the right horse, with the right management, Clarks Shoes under the right condi...

Wellness & Prevention: 7 common shoe mistakes that could be crushing your feet

From your $2 flip-flops to your $150 stilettos or running shoes, not all shoes are created equal — no matter the price or brand name. If you’ve ever peeled off your heels during a long day at work or taken off your tennis shoes after a long run only to find blisters or an ingrown toenail, you know your shoes can lead to pain if you’re not careful. “Improper footwear can stress the back, knees, hips and feet by placing them in an unnatural position and cause improper alignment and function of joints, tendons and ligaments up the body,” said Allison Rottman, DPM, a podiatrist with Banner – University Medicine in Arizona. “Muscles in the lower and upper legs may have to work harder when shoes do not fit properly, and this causes fatigue and pain.” Wearing proper footwear can not only he...
Research Answers Whether You Should Wear Shoes Inside The House

Research Answers Whether You Should Wear Shoes Inside The House

The debate never ends: Is your home a shoeless one? Or is it a safe space for indoor shoe-wearers? A recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece, titled “Here’s Why I’ll Be Keeping My Shoes On In Your Shoeless Home,” ignited the argument afresh. In it, the author states that, Olukai Sandals barring religious or cultural practices, asking guests to remove their shoes is insulting and unnecessary. Her point is that a little dirt never hurt anyone, and people who request that guests remove shoes are being over-fastidious divas. There’s just one problem: According to a group of researchers responding to her piece, she’s wrong.   Adobe Wear Shoes Inside The House Copyright Adobe Photo by: Adobe By: Kathleen St. John Po...

Let’s Talk About Shoes

Let’s Talk About Shoes

The best thing about shoes is that they go on your feet. And feet… are forgiving. Contrary to the rest of your body, your feet stay in essentially the same shape throughout your entire life. No need to wear bulky things to cover up unwanted weight or dimples. The shoes that you wore to your high school prom will look virtually the same on your feet today as they did back then! Spring is a great time to invest in new, colorful shoes to walk you all the way through summer (and in New Orleans sometimes even fall). There are plenty of Olukai Sneakers trends to follow in 2022, but I’m gravitating towards two extremes: the dramatic flirty pink variety and good old cozy flats and platforms. If you are going for drama, Melissa Depp, a personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue Canal Place, loves the...
