US drone that crashed in Yemen appears to have been shot down by Houthi missile, official says

Initial indications are that a United States MQ-9 Reaper drone that crashed near Hodeidah in Yemen on Monday was shot down by a Houthi surface-to-air missile, an American official said. Previously, officials said it was unclear if the drone had been shot down or simply crashed. A spokesperson for the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said in a statement posted to X on Monday that the MQ-9 was shot down "with a suitable missile." The incident is still being investigated. The Houthis also shot down a MQ-9 — which is an unmanned drone typically used for intelligence collection — last November off the coast of Yemen. The Houthis' apparent downing of a US drone comes amid regular attacks by the rebel group on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and increasingly regular...
Ecuador’s most notorious gang leader lived ‘like a king’ while locked up

Ecuador’s most notorious gang leader lived ‘like a king’ while locked up

With its four-piece bathroom suite, queen-size bed and mini fridge, the untidy prison cell of the notorious leader of the Los Choneros gang could have been in a hotel instead of one of Ecuador's largest prison complexes. This is "better than at home… [he] lives like a king," a soldier exclaims in the second of several videos showing Macías' room and personal grassy courtyard, filled with half a dozen of his pet fighting roosters. The videos, shared with CNN, were taken in La Regional prison and filmed by members of the military last year. In another video shot inside Macías' prison cell, a colourful mural depicting the gang leader better known as "Fito," warns "silver or lead." The phrase, popularized by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, offers the grim choice of taki...
Bitcoin euphoria is back as investors prepare for the quadrennial ‘halving’

Bitcoin euphoria is back as investors prepare for the quadrennial ‘halving’

Bitcoin rose to $US50,000 on Monday for the first time in two years, fuelled by a rush of new-investor enthusiasm and growing anticipation over a cryptic-sounding event known as "the halving." Bitcoin, the world's most popular cryptocurrency, dipped back into the high 40s on Tuesday, snapping seven straight days of increases, and it remains far from its all-time high of around $US69,000. But Bitcoin has staged a remarkable comeback over the past year and half, climbing more than 200 per cent from its 2022 low of $US16,000. There are a few key forces forces driving the latest Bitcoin euphoria, including an influx of money from investors in newly launched Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and excitement over the halving, when the rate of Bitcoin production is slashed. ...
Paramount Global to cut 800 staff after record Super Bowl revenue and ratings

Paramount Global to cut 800 staff after record Super Bowl revenue and ratings

Paramount Global, the owner of broadcast and cable TV networks, announced Tuesday it will lay off hundreds of staffers as the media giant looks to reduce costs and grow revenue. The news comes just days after its CBS network saw record-breaking advertising sales and the highest-rated telecast for the Super Bowl. The company's chief executive, Bob Bakish, announced the layoffs in a memo to employees Tuesday obtained by CNN. While Bakish did not specify the number of layoffs, sources familiar with the matter told CNN around 800 employees, or roughly 3 per cent cut of the company's workforce, will be affected. The announcement follows a January 25 memo in which Bakish warned that Paramount Global would "reduce our workforce globally" as part of "our path to earnings ...

US librarian hides lifesaving phones in books for domestic violence victims

It's not every day a librarian takes a boxcutter to a book. But by doing so, Molly Riportella may be saving lives. "I usually try to like go a couple pages after a chapter begins," the Massachusetts librarian said, explaining what she why she was carefully hollowing out the books. Inside the rectangle-shaped holes within the pages, Riportella hides a prepaid mobile phone to be used by a victim of domestic violence. "The phone is a little sliver of hope and real chance to make contact with the outside world," Riportella said. "To talk to a lawyer or talk to an advocate who can get you the next steps to move on." The librarian came up with the idea two years ago when a friend told her they were in a controlling relationship where their pa...

Mother, daughter charged with attempted murder after frying pan attack

Body camera footage captured the bloody aftermath of an attempted murder in January by a Tennessee mother and daughter, according to local authorities. The video shows a father and husband beaten and bloodied after his own wife and daughter beat him with a cast iron pan and tried to choke him with a belt, the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office said. On January 27, deputies responded to a suburb in Ashland City where the man had contacted a neighbour to call 911. The man told deputies he and his wife had been arguing and went to sleep. He was awakened by being hit on the head with the pan, according to a sheriff's office arrest affidavit. When he opened his eyes, he could see his daughter, Kelly Davis, 29, standing over him with the pan in hand, before she hit h...
