Ukraine fires UK-made Storm Shadow missiles into Russia for first time, reports say

Ukraine launched the British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles at targets inside Russia for the first time today, according to a Russian military blog and Reuters, a day after Ukraine fired US-made ATACMS missiles into Russia. Ukraine's use of the UK-supplied missiles to hit Russian territory was confirmed to Reuters by an official on condition of anonymity. British media also reported the use of the cruise missile yesterday, citing sources. A Storm Shadow cruise missile is seen on display at the company's booth at the International Paris Air Show 2023 at the Le Bourget Airport. (Nicolas Economou) Ukraine's Defence Minister Rustem Umerov refused to confirm or deny the use of the UK-made missiles during a news conference yesterday. Nor did a spokesperson for the...

Ukraine says Russia has launched an ICBM in an attack for the first time in the war

Ukraine says Russia has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile targeting Dnipro city in the central-east of the country, the first time Moscow has used such a missile in the war. It wasn't clear exactly what type of missile was fired overnight, but Ukraine's air force said in a statement on Telegram on Thursday that it was launched from Russia's Astrakhan region. The development comes as the war has taken on a growing international dimension with the arrival of North Korean troops to help Russia on the battlefield. King Charles marks 76th birthday at ‘surplus food festival’

King Charles III has marked his 76th birthday on Thursday by opening two food distribution hubs, as part of his Coronation Food Project that he launched a year ago in the hopes of bridging the gap between food poverty and food waste. Charles visited one of the new hubs in south London, which is hosting a "surplus food festival" where meals will be made using food that might otherwise have gone to waste. He was due to open the second Coronation Food Hub in Merseyside in northwest England, in a virtual ceremony. Australia backs Palestinians’ ‘permanent sovereignty’ at UN in significant foreign policy shift

Australia has voted to recognise Palestinians' "permanent sovereignty" over their natural resources in a significant foreign policy shift that breaks with the US and Israel. Votes in favour of two United Nations draft resolutions on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) are the latest in a series of more pro-Palestinian votes Australia has taken at the global body, angering local pro-Israel groups but draw praise from Palestinian advocates. The draft resolution in the UN's Second Committee recognised the "permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources". Votes on both resolutions will now go to the UN's General Assembly. (AP Photo/Julia Ni...

Haka erupts in New Zealand parliament over controversial bill

A group of New Zealand MPs broke into a spirited haka in the country's parliament this week, interrupting a vote on a controversial bill in spectacular fashion. The Treaty Principles Bill, brought by ACT leader David Seymour, seeks to impose a new interpretation of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi (also known as Te Tiriti), a treaty between Māori chiefs and the British crown that is considered one of the founding documents of New Zealand. Advocates for the new bill claim it offers equality to all New Zealand citizens and will remove "privileged" treatment for Māori, while opponents say the bill is either too simplistic, or that it further entrenches social barriers and prejudice that Māori face. Te Pāti Māori MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke tears up a copy of the Treaty Princi...

Trump picks Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his Department of Health and Human Services secretary

President-elect Donald Trump has picked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, a choice that would add to Trump's list of provocative picks whose confirmation processes will test the loyalty of Senate Republicans. Trump on Thursday announced the selection, confirming CNN's earlier reporting, saying he was thrilled to share the pick. "The Safety and Health of all Americans is the most important role of any Administration, and HHS will play a big role in helping ensure that everybody will be protected from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, and food additives that have contributed to the overwhelming Health Crisis in this Country," Trump said in a post on X.
