Irene Cara: Fame singer and actress dies aged 63

The American singer and actress was best known for her title track in the 1980 film Fame, as well as co-writing and singing the smash hit Flashdance... What a Feeling, for which she won an Oscar and a Grammy. She later starred in films opposite Clint Eastwood and Tatum O'Neal. Cara's publicist, who announced her death, said she died at home in Florida but the cause is "currently unknown". Born in 1959 in the Bronx, New York City, Cara was the youngest of five children and started her career on Spanish-language TV. Her father was Puerto Rican and her mother, Cuban-American. Having recorded music as a child, both in Spanish and English, she went on to appear in a number of on-and-off Broadway musicals. But it was in 1980 that Car...
World Cup 2022: ‘Where there is Lionel Messi, there is hope for Argentina’

World Cup 2022: ‘Where there is Lionel Messi, there is hope for Argentina’

Argentina's vast support gathered in their thousands at Qatar's Energy City adjacent to the vast Lusail Stadium with only one man on their minds as they faced World Cup jeopardy. Lionel Messi has carried the hopes of this football-mad nation for most of his career but there was an added layer of tension as Argentina confronted old rivals Mexico in an ear-splitting atmosphere on the stage that will host the final. Argentina knew defeat would effectively end their World Cup after two games following the embarrassment of the loss to Saudi Arabia in the opener. Messi knew this would mean the major honour that has eluded his grasp in a glittering career would be forever out of reach. Messi was, once again, shouldering the burden of Argentina's expectations - and once again ...
Deadly landslide tears through Italian island of Ischia

Deadly landslide tears through Italian island of Ischia

A number of people are feared to have been killed after a mudslide triggered by heavy rains swept away homes on the island of Ischia, near Naples. The torrent of mud and debris dislodged trees, engulfed buildings and dragged cars into the sea as it reached the coast early on Saturday. The body of a woman was reported to have been found under the mud, and several other people are still missing. Dozens of homes are cut off, with bad weather hampering rescuers. Resident Lisa Mocciaro told Ansa news agency: "We started hearing loud thunder at about 03:00 (02:00 GMT), then the first landslide came down, followed by a second one around 05:00. It was horrifying." Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told reporters the situation was "very...

Imran Khan: Former Pakistani PM attends first rally since shooting

Pakistan's ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan has spoken to a huge crowd of supporters in his first public appearance since being shot at and injured three weeks ago. Crowds gathered for a rally in the city of Rawalpindi, taking flags and signs. The former cricket star urged them to live without fear of death. One person was killed and several others injured during the attack earlier this month, which unfolded as Mr Khan led a similar event. The former PM was injured in his right leg and underwent surgery. He has accused members of the current government of plotting the attack, in Wazirabad. Authorities have rejected the accusation and released a video purporting to show a confession from a man they describe as the only suspect in ...
Bale penalty salvages draw for Wales against USA

Bale penalty salvages draw for Wales against USA

Wales were listless and overrun in a first half dominated by a vibrant USA team, who led as Tim Weah finished smartly after a surging run and pass by Christian Pulisic. The half-time introduction of striker Kieffer Moore revitalised Wales, whose newfound energy and purpose turned a one-sided affair into a genuine contest as Ben Davies and Moore both came close to equalising. Then with nine minutes left, the hitherto anonymous Bale was clattered in the box by Walker Zimmerman before confidently whipping his penalty into the net to send the travelling Welsh supporters behind that goal into raptures. Wales finished the game strongly, buoyed to have secured a point on their long-awaited World Cup return when they had appeared to be heading for a defeat which would have left ...

Twitter charity partners condemn Musk’s ‘dangerous’ changes

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) says Elon Musk's surprise move to reinstate former President Donald Trump's account is "dangerous and inconsistent". It also says allowing Kayne West back on Twitter has "raised concerns". This comes as one of Twitter's major advertising partners expresses doubts about its future with Twitter. Twitter did not respond to requests for comment but on its advertising website, the company says it has "long-standing fruitful relationships with key civil rights groups and organizations, including NAACP, ADColor, and the Anti-Defamation League". According to ADL Mr Musk met the civil rights group on 1 November to assure them that no one previously banned would be reinstated until he had installed a transparent, clear proc...
