Meta slashes 8000 jobs in $200 billion AI pivot

Meta's previously-reported 8000-strong job cuts have begun to roll out around the world, with affected employees being notifed from 4am in their local time zones. Last month, Meta confirmed the job cuts were in the works as part of a major AI-focused restructure. "We're doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we're making," Meta's chief people officer Janelle Gale said at the time in an internal memo to employees. The New York Times has also reported that a further 7000 employees will ...

Boss of a $52 billion investment bank turns to AI to replace 8000 ‘lower-value human capital’

The boss of a $52 billion investment bank has described a plan to slash 8000 jobs over the next four years as a reduction in "lower-value human capital". Standard Chartered chief executive Bill Winters told reporters this week there would be job "reductions in favour of machines, and that will accelerate as we go forward into AI (artificial intelligence)". "It's not cost-cutting," Winters said. Standard Chartered chief executive Bill Winters is planning to shed some of the company's "lower-value human capital". (Bloomberg) "It's replacing, in some cases, lower-value human capital with the financial capital and investment capital we're putting in." The comments are the latest public admission from a major financial or tech institution on the rapid path towards g...

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot is suddenly posting antisemitic tropes

Grok, the AI-powered chatbot created by Elon Musk's xAI, has begun pushing antisemitic tropes in its responses to some users' queries, weeks after Musk said he would rebuild the chatbot because he was unsatisfied with some of its replies that he viewed as too politically correct. On Tuesday, Grok connected several antisemitic tropes to an X account with a name it identified as being "Ashkenazi Jewish" that caused controversy with offensive comments posted online about the victims of the recent Texas floods. "[T]hat surname? Every damn time," Grok said in response to a user who asked the bot to identify a woman in an unrelated image. AI chatbot Grok has posted antisemitic material on X. Irish privacy watchdog investigates Elon Musk’s X’s use of personal data to train Grok AI chatbot

Ireland's data privacy watchdog said on Friday it's investigating Elon Musk's social media platform X over its use of personal data to train his artificial intelligence chatbot Grok. The Data Protection Commission said it has opened an inquiry into "the processing of personal data comprised in publicly-accessible posts" that European users posted on X. "The purpose of this inquiry is to determine whether this personal data was lawfully processed in order to train the Grok LLMs" under the bloc's data privacy law, the commission said in a statement posted online. Nvidia becomes world’s most valuable company

Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company after its share price climbed to an all-time high on Tuesday. The stock ended the trading day at nearly $136, up 3.5%, making it more valuable than Microsoft. It overtook Apple earlier this month. American company Nvidia makes computer chips needed for artificial intelligence (AI) software, and demand for its products has boosted its sales and profits over the last few years. Many investors believe its earnings can grow even more, which has caused its share price to soar, though some have questioned its sky-high valuation. Tuesday’s share price rally means the market now values the company at $3.34tn (£2.63tn), with the price having nearly doubled since the start of this year. Eight years ago, the stock was worth less than 1% of its curr...

Europe reaches a deal on the world’s first comprehensive AI rules

European Union negotiators clinched a deal today on the world's first comprehensive artificial intelligence rules, paving the way for legal oversight of technology used in popular generative AI services like ChatGPT that has promised to transform everyday life and spurred warnings of existential dangers to humanity. Negotiators from the European Parliament and the bloc's 27 member countries overcame big differences on controversial points including generative AI and police use of facial recognition surveillance to sign a tentative political agreement for the Artificial Intelligence Act. "Deal!" tweeted European Commissioner Thierry Breton, just before midnight. "The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI." The OpenAI logo is displayed on a c...
