Supreme Court rejects Trump’s bid to delay sentencing in his New York hush money case

A sharply divided Supreme Court rejected President-elect Donald Trump's final bid to put his New York hush-money case on hold, clearing the way for him to be sentenced for felony crimes days before he returns to the presidency. The court's 5-4 order allows Judge Juan M. Merchan to impose a sentence on Friday on Trump, who was convicted in what prosecutors called an attempt to cover up a US$130,000 (A$209,000) hush money payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels. Trump has denied any liaison with Daniels or any wrongdoing. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined with the court's three liberals in rejecting his emergency motion. Everything Donald Trump has promised to do on his first day in the White House

Most US presidents come to office with promises of change and new directions on their lips – but Donald Trump in particular is set to have a busy first day in office. The 45th and 47th president of the US, only the second in history to serve non-consecutive terms, will be sworn in on January 20, 2025. And hot on his heels into the White House are the pack of "Day One" promises Trump made on the campaign trail. Trump has promised a lot of change on his first day in office. US President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognised for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honours for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump's remarkable comeback from an ostracised former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Trump picks investment banker Warren Stephens as UK ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated businessman Warren Stephens to serve as America’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full time,” Trump said in a statement on Truth Social. “I am thrilled that he will now have that opportunity as the top diplomat, representing the USA to one of America’s most cherished and beloved allies.” Stephens, who is CEO of private investment bank Stephens Inc, donated millions to Trump’s re-election campaign this year. If his nomination is successful, Stephens will help to maintain the so-called “special relationship” between the US and the UK. The role of US ambassador to the UK is one of the most coveted diplomatic positions, and presidents have been known to bestow the role to prominent ...

Elon Musk publicised the names of government employees he wants to cut. It’s terrifying federal workers

When President-elect Donald Trump said Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would recommend major cuts to the federal government in his administration, many public employees knew that their jobs could be on the line. Now they have a new fear: becoming the personal targets of the world's richest man – and his legions of followers. Last week, in the midst of the flurry of his daily missives, Musk reposted two X posts that revealed the names and titles of people holding four relatively obscure climate-related government positions.
