Judge declines to delay Trump’s New York hush money trial over complaints of pretrial publicity

Judge declines to delay Trump’s New York hush money trial over complaints of pretrial publicity

The judge in Donald Trump's hush money criminal case turned down the former president’s request to postpone his trial because of publicity about the case. It's the latest in a string of delay denials that Trump has gotten from various courts this week as he fights to stave off the trial's start on Monday with jury selection. Among other things, Trump's lawyers had argued that the jury pool was deluged with what the defense saw as “exceptionally prejudicial” news coverage of the case. The defense maintained that was a reason to hold off the case indefinitely. Judge Juan M. Merchan said that idea was “not tenable.” Trump “appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside. However, this view...

Donald Trump unable to make $707 million bond in civil fraud case, his lawyers tell court

An insurance broker, Gary Giulietti, who testified for Trump during the civil fraud trial, signed an affidavit stating that securing a bond in the full amount "is a practical impossibility." Potential underwriters are seeking cash to back the bond, not properties, according to Trump's lawyers. Trump's lawyers have asked the appeals court to delay posting the bond until his appeal of the case is over, arguing that the value of Trump's properties far exceed the judgment. If the appeals court rules against him, Trump asked the court to delay his posting the bond until his appeal to New York's highest court is heard. Last month, Trump was ordered to pay $541 million in disgorgement, or "ill-gotten gains," by New York Judge Arthur Engoron in a civil fraud case brought by New York...

Hungarian leader says Donald Trump will end the war in Ukraine by not giving ‘a penny’

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said Donald Trump would effectively end the war in Ukraine by cutting off funding to Kyiv, should the former United States president return to power in November. "He (Trump) has a very clear vision," Orban said in an interview to Hungarian broadcaster M1 broadcast on Sunday. "He says the following: first, he will not give a single penny for the Russo-Ukrainian war. That's why the war will end, because it's obvious that Ukraine cannot stand on its own two feet." Biden and Trump barrel into Super Tuesday, toward a likely November rematch despite voter concerns

Biden and Trump barrel into Super Tuesday, toward a likely November rematch despite voter concerns

United States President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump are poised to move much closer to winning their parties' nominations on Tuesday during the biggest day of the primary campaign, despite many voters preferring something other than a November rematch from four years ago. Super Tuesday elections are being held in 16 states and one territory — from Alaska and California to Vermont and Virginia. Hundreds of delegates are at stake, the biggest haul for either party on any single day. While much of the focus is on the presidential race, there are also important down-ballot contests. California voters will choose candidates who will compete to fill the Senate seat long held by Dianne Feinstein. The governor's race will take shape in North Carolina, a state ...
Trump asks judge to cut the $128 million penalty in E. Jean Carroll case or grant him a new trial

Trump asks judge to cut the $128 million penalty in E. Jean Carroll case or grant him a new trial

In a longshot bid, former President Donald Trump is asking the judge overseeing E. Jean Carroll's defamation case against him to significantly reduce the US$83.3 million (A$128.1 million) jury award or grant a new trial. Trump argued that Judge Lewis Kaplan wrongly prohibited him from defending himself during his brief testimony and that warrants a new trial. In court filings Tuesday, Trump's lawyers said Kaplan erred when he stopped Trump from testifying about "his own state of mind" and when he gave an "erroneous jury instruction on the definition of common-law malice." Trump's lawyers said the jury should have been told they needed to find that it was Trump's "sole, exclusive desire to harm" Carroll. "This Court's erroneous decision to dramatically limit the scope...
New Hampshire primary: Donald Trump beats Nikki Haley as he moves closer to Republican presidential nomination

New Hampshire primary: Donald Trump beats Nikki Haley as he moves closer to Republican presidential nomination

Donald Trump has won the New Hampshire primary, tightening his grip on the Republican presidential nomination and bolstering the likelihood of a rematch later this year against President Joe Biden. The result was a setback for former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who invested significant time and financial resources into winning the state. She was the last major challenger in the race after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ended his presidential bid over the weekend, allowing her to campaign as the sole alternative to Trump. Haley intensified her criticism of the former president, questioning his mental acuity and pitching herself as a unifying candidate who would usher in generational change. The appeals failed to resonate with enough voters. Trump can now boast of being the first R...
