US Election 2024 Latest: Trump and Harris enter the final stretch of the 2024 campaign

Uncertainty reigns entering the final full week of the 2024 campaign with Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump locked in a fiercely competitive presidential contest. What happens in the coming days will be pivotal in deciding the winner of next week's election. Trump on Sunday (local time) held a rally at Madison Square Garden where several speakers made racist and crude remarks, including comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who described Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage.” Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, right, is greeted by her running made Minnesota Gov. Fires set in ballot drop boxes destroy hundreds of US election vote

Incendiary devices have been set off at two ballot drop boxes — one in Portland and another in nearby Vancouver, Washington — destroying hundreds of ballots in what one official called a “direct attack on democracy” about a week before a heated US election day. The early morning fire at the drop box in Portland was extinguished quickly thanks to a suppression system inside the box as well as a nearby security guard, police said, and just three ballots were damaged there. But within a few hours, another fire was discovered at a transit centre drop box across the Columbia River in Vancouver. How does the Electoral College work? Explaining the centuries-old system that decides the US election

When the United States heads to the polls for the election, the popular vote won't decide whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump becomes president. Instead, it will be whoever wins the most Electoral College votes. It's a political system that's vastly different from our own here in Australia – and it's not without its critics. Here's how it works. It's not the popular vote that decides who wins the US election - its the votes of the Electoral College, like these ones. (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik) How does the Electoral College system work? Each state plus the District of Columbia is allocated a number of Electoral College votes. Whichever presidential candidate wins the popular vote in each state gets all of that state's electoral votes. There are...

Why the Harris campaign has spent $16 million on a Facebook page with 1000 followers

As Donald Trump and Kamala Harris feverishly chase undecided voters in the final stretch of the US presidential campaign, millions of people in battleground states are being served ads on Facebook and Instagram from an obscure page calling itself "The Daily Scroll." The social media ads, which are adorned with a nondescript logo resembling a pair of checkmarks, have promoted news articles from mainstream outlets including CNN, ABC and NBC, showing easing US inflation, cheaper insulin prices, and the consequences of state abortion bans. But the ads on Meta-owned platforms aren't being paid for by any news outlet — they're a product of Harris' presidential campaign, which has spent heavily on social media platforms and embraced influencers to power her online efforts against Trum...

Pope Francis criticises Trump and Harris, says voters must choose between ‘lesser of two evils’

Pope Francis on Friday described the choice US voters must make in the presidential election as one between the "lesser of two evils", deeming former US President Donald Trump's anti-migrant policies and Vice President Kamala Harris' support of abortion rights as both being "against life". "One must choose the lesser of two evils. Who is the lesser of two evils? That lady or that gentleman? I don't know," Francis said during a press conference on the papal plane, referring to Harris and Trump. "Everyone with a conscience should think on this and do it." Kamala Harris’s pain-free campaign faces first crunch moment

In American politics it’s customary to suggest that most voters don’t start paying attention to the presidential election until after the Labor Day holiday weekend. Well, that occasion - seen here as the unofficial end of summer - has now been and gone. And as a noticeable chill is felt in the air, many more voters will start to take note of politics. That includes the crucial swing voters in a handful of closely contested states who will ultimately decide the race for the White House. Right on cue, as these eyes start to focus on the election, we have a presidential debate that will see Donald Trump and Kamala Harris go head-to-head for the first time. In fact, it will be the first time the two candidates have ever met in person. The high-stakes event in Philadelphia on Tuesday night ...
