King Charles’ first official portrait vandalised by activists

Activists from an animal rights group have vandalised the first official portrait of King Charles, which is on display in a London gallery. Campaign group Animal Rising posted a video on its social media channels on Tuesday showing two activists using a paint roller to stick signs over the portrait of the monarch. Members of the public have been free to visit the portrait of the monarch, which is on display at the Philip Mould gallery in central London until June 21. The painting, the first official portrait of King Charles as monarch, raised eyebrows when it was unveiled earlier this year. Artist Jonathon Yeo depicted the king against a background of crimson red brush strokes, sparking mixed reactions. Activists covered the king's head with an image of British ...

Rishi Sunak’s plan to make 18-year-olds do national service grabs attention on UK election trail

All 18-year-olds in Britain will have to perform a year of mandatory military or civilian national service if the governing Conservative Party wins the July 4 national election, the party has announced. The UK introduced military conscription for men and some women during World War II, and imposed 18 months of mandatory military service for men between 1947 and 1960. Since then Britain has had an all-volunteer military whose size has steadily shrunk. That engagement would have been the first appearance announced for the 42-year-old royal since she underwent abdominal surgery. The announcement by the Ministry of Defence caused confusion, because Prince William and Kate's office, Kensington Palace, had not confirmed any scheduled public events for Kate. The BBC reported that the Army did not seek approval from the palace before publishing the page, which had a picture of Kate and copy stating she would be reviewing troops on 8 June. Kate has been out of the public eye since January, when palace officials announced that she was admitted to a private London hospital for...
