Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was confronted by protesters from the environmental group Rising Tide outside the XXXX Brewery in Brisbane. A protester later identified as Natalie Lindner confronted Dutton and said: "Nuclear and gas will drive up energy bills. Why are you lying to the Australian people?" Peter Dutton in Brisbane today. US official labels Australia a ‘dumper’ of aluminium as tariff fallout continues

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has labelled Australia as a "dumper" of under-priced aluminium as domestic politicians scramble to push for an exemption on steel and aluminium tariffs. "You've got dumpers in the rest of the world. Japan dumps steel, China dumps steel," he told Fox Business. "We're going to stop that nonsense and bring steel here. "We're not going to stand for China dumping, Japan dumping, Australia does a lot of aluminium at below cost." Trump refused to grant Australia an exemption. (Getty) Lutnick said Trump was "protecting America". Australia's steel and aluminium exports to the US amount to about 0.2 per cent of the national total export value. This morning, opposition leader Peter Dutton promised to "get a deal done" with U...

Australian ambassador to return to Kyiv at critical point in Russia’s war on Ukraine

Australia's ambassador will return to Kyiv next month, almost three years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine prompted the embassy's evacuation. The announcement by Foreign Minister Penny Wong on her first visit to Ukraine since the unprovoked assault, followed repeated calls from Ukraine, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to relocate Canberra's diplomatic representatives from Poland. The visit and reopening came at what Wong called "such an important time for your country and for the future of your people", amid huge uncertainty about what impact US President-elect Donald Trump will have on the war. Australia backs Palestinians’ ‘permanent sovereignty’ at UN in significant foreign policy shift

Australia has voted to recognise Palestinians' "permanent sovereignty" over their natural resources in a significant foreign policy shift that breaks with the US and Israel. Votes in favour of two United Nations draft resolutions on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) are the latest in a series of more pro-Palestinian votes Australia has taken at the global body, angering local pro-Israel groups but draw praise from Palestinian advocates. The draft resolution in the UN's Second Committee recognised the "permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources". Votes on both resolutions will now go to the UN's General Assembly. (AP Photo/Julia Ni...
