Plane carrying three people crashes in South Florida near a major highway

A small plane carrying three people crashed on Friday morning in South Florida near a major interstate highway and pushed a car onto railroad tracks, officials said. Boca Raton police said several roads near the Boca Raton Airport were closed near Interstate 95 after the plane went down shortly after 10am (midnight AEST) local media reported the plane was on fire and firefighters were responding. Passengers in upside-down crash landing offered $46,000 each

Delta Air Lines is offering US$30,000 ($46,847) to the passengers involved in a flight that crashed, turned upside down, and caught fire at Toronto Airport earlier this week, an airline spokesperson told CNN. "Delta Care Team representatives are telling customers this gesture has no strings attached and does not affect rights," said Morgan Durrant, a spokesperson for the airline. If all 76 passengers involved took the money, it would add up to a little over US$2.2 million ($3.44 million). The passenger plane ended up upside down. Vincent Genova, of law firm Rochon Genova, said the offer was me...

Black Hawk helicopter involved in DC mid-air collision may not have heard key instruction, investigators say

The crew of the Army helicopter that collided in midair with an American Airlines jet near Washington, DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport may have had inaccurate altitude readings in the moments before the crash, and also may not have heard key instructions from air traffic controllers to move behind the plane, investigators said yesterday. National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy told reporters that the recording from the Black Hawk helicopter cockpit suggested an incomplete radio transmission may have left the crew without understanding how it should shift position just before the January 29 crash, in which all 67 aboard the two aircraft were killed. “That transmission was interrupted -– it was stepped on,” she said, leaving them unable to hea...

Azerbaijan observes day of mourning for air crash victims as speculation mount about its cause

Azerbaijan on Thursday observed a nationwide day of mourning for the victims of the plane crash that killed 38 people and left all 29 survivors injured as speculation mounted about a possible cause of the disaster that remained unknown. Azerbaijan Airlines' Embraer 190 was en-route from Azerbaijan's capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus on Wednesday when it was diverted for reasons yet unclear and crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan after flying east across the Caspian Sea. The plane went down about 3 kilometres from Aktau. Cellphone footage circulating online appeared to show the aircraft making a steep descent before smashing into the ground in a fireball. Japan suspends its Osprey flights after the fatal crash of a US Air Force aircraft

Japan is suspending flights by its Osprey aircraft, officials said, one day after a US Air Force Osprey based in Japan crashed into the sea during a training mission. Tokyo said it also asked the US military to ground all Ospreys operating in Japan except for those joining the search operations at the crash site. At least one of the eight crew members aboard was killed, but the status of the others is not yet known. It comes just three months after a US Marine Corps Osprey with 23 on board crashed on the Tiwi Islands near Darwin during a multinational military exercise. Nicknamed the "Widowmaker" by some pilots, the revolutionary Osprey aircraft is part helicopter and part aircraft and is notoriously difficult to fly. Three US marines were killed and five ser...
