Vaccine sceptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr is sworn in as Trump’s health chief after a close Senate vote

Robert F. Kennedy Jr has been sworn as President Donald Trump’s health secretary after a close Senate vote, putting the prominent vaccine skeptic in control of $US1.7 trillion ($2.7m) in federal spending, vaccine recommendations and food safety as well as health insurance programs for roughly half the country. Nearly all Republicans fell in line behind Trump despite hesitancy over Kennedy’s views on vaccines, voting 52-48 to elevate the scion of one of America’s most storied political — and Democratic — families to secretary of the Health and Human Services Department. Democrats unanimously opposed Kennedy. Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, who had polio as a child, was the only “no” vote among Republicans, mirroring his stands against Trump's picks for the Pentagon chief and d...

Trump officials fired nuclear staff not realising they oversee the country’s weapons stockpile, sources say

Trump administration officials fired more than 300 staffers on Thursday night at the National Nuclear Security Administration — the agency tasked with managing the nation's nuclear stockpile — as part of broader Energy Department layoffs, according to four people with knowledge of the matter. Sources told CNN the officials did not seem to know this agency oversees America's nuclear weapons. An Energy Department spokesperson disputed the number of personnel affected, telling CNN that "less than 50 people" were "dismissed" from NNSA, and that the dismissed staffers "held primarily administrative and clerical roles." Google Maps will change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America

Google is complying with President Donald Trump's executive action that renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Soon, the name change will appear on Google Maps. In a post on X, Google explained that it has a "longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources." The name will be tweaked when the Geographic Names Information System, a government database of names and location data, is updated. Former President Barack Obama renamed the Alaska landmark to Denali in 2015 as a nod to the region's native population. Both changes stem...

Trump’s tariffs are a $2.25 trillion gamble with the economy and prices

US President Donald Trump is on the verge of hitting America's three biggest trading partners with sweeping tariffs, a far more aggressive use of his favourite economic weapon than anything he did during his first term. The looming import taxes on Mexico, Canada and China will be a major test of Trump's unorthodox use of tariffs, which he's described as "the greatest thing ever invented". It's an enormous gamble, arguably a bigger one than any economic policy Trump enacted during his four-plus years in the White House. And this strategy has the potential to upend the thing many voters care about the most: the economy and the cost of living. Everything Donald Trump has promised to do on his first day in the White House

Most US presidents come to office with promises of change and new directions on their lips – but Donald Trump in particular is set to have a busy first day in office. The 45th and 47th president of the US, only the second in history to serve non-consecutive terms, will be sworn in on January 20, 2025. And hot on his heels into the White House are the pack of "Day One" promises Trump made on the campaign trail. Trump has promised a lot of change on his first day in office. (AP) It all adds up to a very busy day in the office. Dictatorship? In an interview with Fox last year, Trump said he would not use his presidential powers to pursue retribution against anybody – "Except for day one". "I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill,...

Investigators attempt to arrest South Korean president

South Korean investigators have attempted to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived martial law decree last month, as hundreds of his supporters gathered near his residence in Seoul, vowing to protect him. About 20 investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials and police officers were seen entering the gate of Yoon's residence in Seoul to execute a warrant for his detention. It wasn't clear whether the president would cooperate with authorities trying to detain him.
