Sydney inundated with a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours

More than a month's worth of rain was dumped over Sydney in the 24 hours to 9am, with more than a hundred emergency calls made overnight. The most persistent rainfall was in inner-city Sydney with Observatory Hill recording 142mm within just 24 hours, smashing the total monthly average of 133mm for June. "Sydney and some of the eastern suburbs had a month's worth of rain in the last 24 hours on Saturday," BoM senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said. Sydney's east was mostly inundated with rain while the city's west received between 25mm and 50mm from Richmond to Badgery's Creek. The State Emergency Service (SES) was called to 140 jobs since 6pm yesterday which included storm damage repairs, sandbagging and and fixing leaky roofs. About 106 of those calls...

High ocean temperatures are harming the Florida coral reef. Rescue crews are racing to help

LAYTON, Fla. (AP) — Steps away from the warming waters of Florida Bay, marine biologist Emily Becker removed covers from the dozens of water-filled tanks under her watchful eye. Nestled in seawater carefully maintained at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius) lay hundreds of pieces of coral — some a sickly white from the bleaching that threatens to kill them, others recovered to a healthy bright iodine in color. As Becker looked over the coral, crews of reef rescue groups arrived in trucks carrying more — brought up by divers in a massive effort aimed at saving the coral from an ocean that is cooking it alive. “People jumped into action really quickly, as best as they could,” Becker said, wiping sweat from her brow. ocean hype University of Miami Rosensti...

When wealthy adventurers take huge risks, who should foot the bill for rescue attempts?

When millionaire Steve Fossett’s plane went missing over the Nevada range in 2007, the swashbuckling adventurer had already been the subject of two prior emergency rescue operations thousands of miles apart. And that prompted a prickly question: After a sweeping search for the wealthy risktaker ended, who should foot the bill? In recent days, the massive hunt for a submersible vehicle lost during a north Atlantic descent to explore the wreckage of the Titanic has refocused attention on that conundrum. And with rescuers and the public fixated first on saving and then on mourning those aboard, it has again made for uneasy conversation. “Five people have just lost their lives and to start talking about insurance, all the rescue efforts and the cost can seem pretty heartless — but the thing...
