Ukraine’s president takes his diplomatic campaign against Russia to Arab summit, G7

Ukraine’s president takes his diplomatic campaign against Russia to Arab summit, G7

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed a summit of Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia on Friday before what a senior official said would be a trip to Japan for a meeting with the leaders of the world's most powerful democracies. Zelenskyy has in recent months made foreign trips to shore up diplomatic support for Ukraine's fight against Russia's full-scale invasion almost 15 months ago and solicit more military support. He earlier this week returned from a three-day trip to Italy, the Vatican, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Ukraine and Russia are squaring up for a major and potentially decisive phase in the war as Kyiv prepares an expected counteroffensive. The conflict has been bogged down in a war of attrition in recent months amid bad weather. Zelensky...

Poland reverts to historic name for Russia’s Kaliningrad

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland is reverting to using its historical name for Kaliningrad, the Russian city and administrative region that sits on its border. From now on, it will be designated on Polish maps as Krolewiec, based on the recommendation of the government commission for geographic names abroad. The Kremlin has reacted angrily: spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called it a “process bordering on insanity,” going beyond Russophobia. The city, formerly known as Koenigsberg, was ceded from Germany to the Soviet Union after World War II. In 1946, it was renamed Kaliningrad, after Mikhail Kalinin, one of the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution. The Polish authorities point out that Kalinin was one of six Soviet officials who ordered the execution of more than 21,000 Polish prisoners of war...

Russian girl who drew antiwar sketch leaves orphanage

A Russian girl sent to an orphanage after drawing an anti Ukraine war sketch at school has been taken from the facility by her mother, the Kremlin children's rights commissioner said. In a case that drew international outrage, the father of 13-year-old Maria Moskalyova was convicted of discrediting the Russian military and handed a two-year prison term, while his daughter was dispatched to the orphanage. The Kremlin children's rights ombudsperson, Maria Lvova-Belova, said on Wednesday she had met the girl's mother, who had long been separated from her husband and child. Popular Russian military blogger killed in bomb blast

A well-known Russian military blogger was killed in an explosion at a cafe in St Petersburg on Sunday, officials said, in what appeared to be an audacious attack on a high-profile pro-Kremlin figure. Vladlen Tatarsky died when a blast tore through the cafe where he was appearing as a guest of a pro-war group called Cyber Front Z. Authorities said they were treating the case as suspected murder. Twenty-five other people were injured in the blast, 19 of whom were hospitalised, the city's governor said. The Russian Ministry of Health said six people were in critical condition. Investigators were questioning everyone who was inside the cafe, state media reported. Photos of the scene showed extensive damage to the building in which the cafe was located. CIA Director Dismisses Putin Health Rumors

CIA Director Dismisses Putin Health Rumors

The CIA’s top spy on Thursday dismissed persistent speculation that Russian President Vladimir Putin is suffering from medical issues as he wages an unprovoked and brutal military campaign in Ukraine. “There are lots of rumors about President Putin’s health,” CIA Director William Burns said during a talk at the Aspen Security Forum. “As far as we can tell, he’s entirely too healthy.” Putin is, however, deeply misguided in his justification for launching the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Burns said, before ultimately specifying that his comments do not represent “a formal intelligence judgment.” “His views have hardened,” Burns said, “but he’s got his own way of looking at reality. And as we could see in the first stages of this war, it was based on some profoundly...
