Julian Assange pleads guilty in US court

Julian Assange has pleaded guilty to a single felony charge in the courthouse of a remote US territory in the Pacific, ending a decade-plus legal saga over the publication of a trove of classified documents. The plane carrying the WikiLeaks founder to apparent freedom landed in the remote US territory of Saipan in the ocean between Papua New Guinea and Japan shortly before 6.30am, his supporters posted on X, for the final stage of a plea deal reached with the US Justice Department. Assange, clad in a dark suit with a bronze-coloured tie, arrived at the US courthouse in Saipan shortly before 8am AEST (Saipan is in the same timezone as Australia's east coast). The painting, the first official portrait of King Charles as monarch, raised eyebrows when it was unveiled earlier this year. Artist Jonathon Yeo depicted the king against a background of crimson red brush strokes, sparking mixed reactions. Activists covered the king's head with an image of British ...

The scandal over Kate, Princess of Wales' family snapshot is a new chapter in the thorny relationship between the media and Britain's royal family. It's also a sign of how hard it is for the monarchy to control its own narrative in the social-media era. "Social media has empowered the royals to curate their public image in new ways," royal historian Ed Owens said on Tuesday. The photo of the Princess of Wales and her children intended to calm speculation about her health (left) and the inconsistencies that caused concern it had been digitally manipulated (right).
