Bad buildings, biological weapons and killing cows: Trump’s most notable lines at the UN

US President Donald Trump's hour-long address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York was full of mockery, bizarre tangents and praises for his own accomplishments. He spent a considerable amount of time criticising the UN for its "bad teleprompter and bad building" and failure to stop international conflicts, leaving it up to him to end seven "unendable" wars. Maybe his most shocking line was when he told world leaders, "Your countries are going to hell" if they did not crack down on migration. Trump calls climate change ‘the greatest con job ever perpetrated’ on the world

US President Donald Trump has told the UN General Assembly that climate change was "the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world". Addressing the global body at its New York headquarters on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST), he scoffed at past predictions warning of global disaster from climate change. The vast majority of climate scientists have concluded climate change is happening, and that it is mainly caused by fossil fuel pollution. But Trump refused to be swa...

Trump criticises recognition of Palestine and hits out at UN in General Assembly speech

US President Donald Trump has criticised the decision by Australia and other allies to recognise the state of Palestine, while hitting out at the United Nations itself in his first speech to the global body in five years. He was speaking a day after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined leaders from France, the UK, Belgium and several other countries in formally announcing or confirming their support for a Palestinian state in a move aimed at galvanising support for a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict. Without naming the individual countries, Trump accused them of rewarding Hamas for the deadly October 7 attacks. UN nuclear watchdog chief says Iran could again begin enriching uranium in ‘matter of months’

The head of the United Nation's nuclear watchdog says US strikes on Iran fell short of causing total damage to its nuclear program and that Tehran could restart enriching uranium "in a matter of months", contradicting US President Donald Trump's claims the US set Tehran's ambitions back by decades. Rafael Grossi's comments appear to support an early assessment from the Pentagon's Defence Intelligence Agency, first reported on by CNN, which suggests the US' strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites last week did not destroy the core components of its nuclear program, and likely only set it back by months. While the final military and intelligence assessment has yet to come, Trump has repeatedly claimed to have "completely and totally obliterated" Tehran's nuclear program. IA...

Trump calls for ceasefire deal in war in Gaza as signs of progress emerge

US President Donald Trump has urged progress in ceasefire talks in the 20-month war in Gaza, as Israel and Hamas appeared to move closer to an agreement. A top adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ron Dermer, was set to travel to Washington this week for talks on a ceasefire, an Israeli official said, and plans were being made for Netanyahu to travel there in the coming weeks, a sign there may be movement on a deal. The official declined to discuss the visit's focus and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss plans that had not been finalised. Australia backs Palestinians’ ‘permanent sovereignty’ at UN in significant foreign policy shift

Australia has voted to recognise Palestinians' "permanent sovereignty" over their natural resources in a significant foreign policy shift that breaks with the US and Israel. Votes in favour of two United Nations draft resolutions on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) are the latest in a series of more pro-Palestinian votes Australia has taken at the global body, angering local pro-Israel groups but draw praise from Palestinian advocates. The draft resolution in the UN's Second Committee recognised the "permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources". Votes on both resolutions will now go to the UN's General Assembly. (AP Photo/Julia Ni...
