NYC Mayor Eric Adams charged with taking bribes and illegal campaign funds from foreign sources

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on charges that he took illegal campaign contributions and bribes from foreign nationals in exchange for favours that included helping Turkish officials get fire safety approvals for a new diplomatic building in the city. Adams, a former police officer, faces conspiracy, wire fraud and bribery charges in a five-count indictment that describes a decade-long trail of crimes. The US attorney's office in Manhattan alleges in the indictment that Adams "not only accepted, but sought illegal campaign contributions" to his mayoral campaign. A senior official in the Turkish diplomatic establishment "facilitated many straw donations" to Adams and arranged for Adams and his companions to receive free or discounted travel on Turkey's nationa...

Sydney inundated with a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours

More than a month's worth of rain was dumped over Sydney in the 24 hours to 9am, with more than a hundred emergency calls made overnight. The most persistent rainfall was in inner-city Sydney with Observatory Hill recording 142mm within just 24 hours, smashing the total monthly average of 133mm for June. "Sydney and some of the eastern suburbs had a month's worth of rain in the last 24 hours on Saturday," BoM senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said. Sydney's east was mostly inundated with rain while the city's west received between 25mm and 50mm from Richmond to Badgery's Creek. The State Emergency Service (SES) was called to 140 jobs since 6pm yesterday which included storm damage repairs, sandbagging and and fixing leaky roofs. About 106 of those calls...

Colombia to sever diplomatic ties with Israel over Gaza ‘genocide’

Colombia says it will break diplomatic relations with Israel on Thursday over its actions in Gaza. Colombian President Gustavo Petro made the announcement at a rally in Bogotá's Bolívar Square on Wednesday, describing the Israeli government's handling of the war in Gaza as "genocidal". Israel launched its assault in the Palestinian territory following terror group Hamas' attacks on October 7, which left more than 1,200 people dead and saw more than 250 taken hostage – many of whom remain in captivity today. Now nearing its eight month, Israel's war in the isolated enclave has killed more than 34,000 people, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Israel's foreign minister, Israel Katz, condemned Colombia's announcement and accused Petro of rewarding Hamas,...

New study finds no brain injuries among ‘Havana syndrome’ patients

An array of advanced tests found no brain injuries or degeneration among US diplomats and other government employees who suffer mysterious health problems once dubbed "Havana syndrome, " researchers reported today. The National Institutes of Health's nearly five-year study offers no explanation for symptoms including headaches, balance problems and difficulties with thinking and sleep that were first reported in Cuba in 2016 and later by hundreds of American personnel in multiple countries. But it did contradict some earlier findings that raised the spectre of brain injuries in people experiencing what the State Department now calls "anomalous health incidents." Girl, six, and parents shot, wounded over stray ball in US, neighbours say

A North Carolina man shot and wounded a six-year-old girl and her parents after children went to retrieve a basketball that had rolled into his yard, according to neighbours and the girl's family — another in a string of recent shootings sparked by seemingly trivial circumstances. Gaston County Police Chief Stephen Zill said at a news conference Wednesday that his department and the US Marshals Service's Regional Fugitive Task Force were conducting a broad search for 24-year-old Robert Louis Singletary, who fled after the Tuesday night shootings near Gastonia, a city of roughly 80,000 people west of Charlotte. Singletary, who has been out on bond in a December attack in which authorities say he assaulted a woman with a hammer, is wanted in Tuesday's shootings on four counts of ...
