Mitch McConnell won’t seek reelection in 2026, ending long tenure as Republican power broker

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is announcing he won't seek reelection next year, ending a decades-long tenure as a power broker who championed conservative causes but ultimately ceded ground to the fierce GOP populism of US President Donald Trump. McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in US history, chose his 83rd birthday to share his decision not to run for another term in Kentucky and to retire when his current term ends. He informed The Associated Press of his decision before he was set to address colleagues in a speech on the Senate floor on Thursday (Friday AEDT). His announcement begins the epilogue of a storied career as a master strategist, one in which he helped forge a conservative Supreme Court and steered the Senate through tax cuts, presidential i...

Elon Musk is checking on US gold supply at Fort Knox. Here’s what we know about one of the world’s most secure buildings

US President Donald Trump says Elon Musk will be looking at Fort Knox, the legendary depository in Kentucky for American gold reserves, to make sure the gold is still there. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says there is an audit every year and that "all the gold is present and accounted for". The United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox has stored precious metal bullion reserves for the United States since 1937 and has become synonymous for secure and well protected. What do Trump’s executive orders say on tariffs and how would they work?

With a trio of executive orders, US President Donald Trump has almost instantly thrown the world economy and his own goal of cutting inflation into turmoil. His tariffs against Canada and Mexico in order to stop illegal immigration and the illicit fentanyl trade led to retaliatory taxes by both countries on US imports. He placed an additional 10 per cent tariff on imports from China with the stated goal of stopping the production of fentanyl. A trade war is looming between the US, Canada, and Mexico. (AP) But on a deeper level, Trump suddenly hit the US economy with tax increases that, if sustained, could total more than US$1 trillion ($1.61 trillion) in 10 years. He did so without congressional approval and by his own acknowledgement at the perilous chance of ...

Trump’s tariffs are a $2.25 trillion gamble with the economy and prices

US President Donald Trump is on the verge of hitting America's three biggest trading partners with sweeping tariffs, a far more aggressive use of his favourite economic weapon than anything he did during his first term. The looming import taxes on Mexico, Canada and China will be a major test of Trump's unorthodox use of tariffs, which he's described as "the greatest thing ever invented". It's an enormous gamble, arguably a bigger one than any economic policy Trump enacted during his four-plus years in the White House. And this strategy has the potential to upend the thing many voters care about the most: the economy and the cost of living. President Donald Trump fires inspectors general from more than a dozen federal agencies

President Donald Trump fired the inspectors general from more than a dozen federal agencies in a Friday night purge, according to a Trump administration official, paving the way for him to install his own picks for the independent watchdog roles. Agency inspectors general received an email late Friday from Sergio Gor, the head of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, informing them that "changing priorities" had led to their positions being "terminated" effective immediately, according to a person familiar with the matter. The shake-up affected a broad swath of the federal government, including the departments of State, Energy, the Interior, Defense and Transportation. Official portraits of Donald Trump, JD Vance released

New official portraits of US President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance have been released days ahead of the Republican's return to the White House. The images were released on social media yesterday by Trump's chief photographer, Daniel Torok. Torok posted them with the caption, "We are entering the Golden Age of America". Trump is depicted unsmiling and looking fixedly at the camera. He is wearing a dark blue suit and tie, with US flag lapel pin. Vance is similarly attired, but is shown smiling with his arms crossed.
