What do Trump’s executive orders say on tariffs and how would they work?

With a trio of executive orders, US President Donald Trump has almost instantly thrown the world economy and his own goal of cutting inflation into turmoil. His tariffs against Canada and Mexico in order to stop illegal immigration and the illicit fentanyl trade led to retaliatory taxes by both countries on US imports. He placed an additional 10 per cent tariff on imports from China with the stated goal of stopping the production of fentanyl. A trade war is looming between the US, Canada, and Mexico. He did so without congressional approval and by his own acknowledgement at the perilous chance of ...

Trump’s tariffs are a $2.25 trillion gamble with the economy and prices

US President Donald Trump is on the verge of hitting America's three biggest trading partners with sweeping tariffs, a far more aggressive use of his favourite economic weapon than anything he did during his first term. The looming import taxes on Mexico, Canada and China will be a major test of Trump's unorthodox use of tariffs, which he's described as "the greatest thing ever invented". It's an enormous gamble, arguably a bigger one than any economic policy Trump enacted during his four-plus years in the White House. And this strategy has the potential to upend the thing many voters care about the most: the economy and the cost of living. President Donald Trump fires inspectors general from more than a dozen federal agencies

President Donald Trump fired the inspectors general from more than a dozen federal agencies in a Friday night purge, according to a Trump administration official, paving the way for him to install his own picks for the independent watchdog roles. Agency inspectors general received an email late Friday from Sergio Gor, the head of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, informing them that "changing priorities" had led to their positions being "terminated" effective immediately, according to a person familiar with the matter. The shake-up affected a broad swath of the federal government, including the departments of State, Energy, the Interior, Defense and Transportation. Official portraits of Donald Trump, JD Vance released

New official portraits of US President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance have been released days ahead of the Republican's return to the White House. The images were released on social media yesterday by Trump's chief photographer, Daniel Torok. Torok posted them with the caption, "We are entering the Golden Age of America". Trump is depicted unsmiling and looking fixedly at the camera. He is wearing a dark blue suit and tie, with US flag lapel pin. Vance is similarly attired, but is shown smiling with his arms crossed. Donald Trump wants to make Hollywood "bigger, better and stronger" and has cast Mel Gibson, Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone as stars of what he is calling his "Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California." On Wednesday, the President-elect announced on his social media site that the three actors would be his eyes and ears to the moviemaking town. "It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!" he wrote on Truth Social. Donald Trump on stage with Sylvester Stallone. Greenland’s leader says his people don’t want to be Americans as Trump covets territory

Greenland's prime minister said that the mineral-rich Arctic territory's people don't want to be Americans, but that he understands US President-elect Donald Trump's interest in the island given its strategic location and he's open to greater cooperation with Washington. The comments from the Greenlandic leader, Múte B. Egede, came after Trump said earlier this week that he wouldn't rule out using force or economic pressure in order to make Greenland — which is an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark — a part of the United States. Trump said that it was a matter of national security for the U.S. Egede acknowledged that Greenland is part of the North American continent, and “a place that the Americans see as part of their world.” He said he hasn't spoken to Trump, but that ...
