Justice Department seeks to revive Trump documents case

Special counsel Jack Smith is arguing to revive his office's classified documents case against Donald Trump with a vigorous defence of its authority in the first formal filing since Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the criminal case last month. In a brief filed with the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta on Monday, Smith argues that Cannon's decision to end the Trump case because the prosecutors' office lacked constitutional authority was "novel" and "lack[ed] merit." Cannon had ruled the Justice Department didn't have the ability to appoint or fund special counsels like Smith. Oprah gets a standing O as she delivers endorsement for Harris

It was previously revealed that Oprah Winfrey would make a convention appearance tonight, but it wasn't clear what she would be doing, or whether she would endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. "Good evening everybody!" Winfrey shouted in tones she once used to open her talk show, and proceeded with a speech to a crowd in her hometown Chicago. "What we're going to do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States." Oprah Winfrey speaks during the Democratic National Convention. (AP) Winfrey delivered a famous endorsement to then-Senator Barack Obama, her fellow Chicagoan, during his 2008 presidential campaign. "Who says you can't go home again?" she said tonight. Winfrey, a registered independent, is making a direct appeal to unaff...

Julian Assange pleads guilty in US court

Julian Assange has pleaded guilty to a single felony charge in the courthouse of a remote US territory in the Pacific, ending a decade-plus legal saga over the publication of a trove of classified documents. The plane carrying the WikiLeaks founder to apparent freedom landed in the remote US territory of Saipan in the ocean between Papua New Guinea and Japan shortly before 6.30am, his supporters posted on X, for the final stage of a plea deal reached with the US Justice Department. Assange, clad in a dark suit with a bronze-coloured tie, arrived at the US courthouse in Saipan shortly before 8am AEST (Saipan is in the same timezone as Australia's east coast). Who is Julian Assange and why is the embattled WikiLeaks founder now on the verge of freedom?

A plea deal with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will bring a stunning conclusion to an international saga of the quixotic hacker who exposed government secrets. The deal reached with the US Justice Department will lead to freedom for Assange after the Australian spent 12 years either in self-exile or prison. This is a look at Assange, the case and the latest developments. Who is Julian Assange? An Australian editor and publisher, he is best known for having founded the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, which gained massive attention — and notoriety — for the 2010 release of almost half a million documents relating to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His activism made him a cause célèbre among press freedom advocates who said his work in exposing US milita...

US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, convicted of all three felonies in federal gun trial

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, could be sentenced just days before the US presidential election after he was convicted of all three felony charges related to the purchase of a revolver in 2018 when, prosecutors argued, he lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs. Jurors on Tuesday (early Wednesday AEST) found Hunter Biden guilty of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application by saying he was not a drug user and illegally having the gun for 11 days. He stared straight ahead and showed little emotion as the verdict was read. After the verdict, he patted his defence attorney on the shoulder. He faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Maryellen ...
