Trump has 90 days to do 150 trade deals. Financial markets aren’t buying it

President Donald Trump and his advisers said this was the plan all along: Scare the bejesus out of the world by announcing astronomically high tariffs, get countries to come to the negotiating table, and — with the exception of China — back away from the most punishing trade barriers as America works out new trade agreements around the globe. But Trump's 90-day pause on his "reciprocal" tariffs that were never actually reciprocal gives his administration just three months to strike enormously complex trade deals with dozens of countries that it says are lining up to negotiate. Financial markets aren't buying it. Stocks have whipsawed as volatility has spiked. President Donald Trump and his advisers said this was the plan all along: Scare the bejesus out of the world by...

Tariffs will make sneakers, jeans and almost everything Americans wear cost more, trade groups warn

Sending children back to school in new sneakers, jeans and T-shirts is likely to cost US families significantly more this fall if the bespoke tariffs President Donald Trump put on leading exporters take effect as planned, American industry groups warn. About 97 per cent of the clothes and shoes purchased in the US are imported, predominantly from Asia, the American Apparel & Footwear Association said, citing its most recent data. Walmart, Gap Inc., Lululemon and Nike are a few of the companies that have a majority of their clothing made in Asian countries. Vance accuses Denmark of underinvesting in Greenland as Trump presses for US takeover of the island

US Vice President JD Vance said on Friday that Denmark has "underinvested" in Greenland's security and demanded that Denmark change its approach as President Donald Trump continues to talk of taking over the Danish territory. The pointed remarks came as Vance visited US troops on Pituffik Space Base on the mineral-rich, strategically critical island. "Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland," Vance said. Utah bans fluoride in public drinking water, a first in the US

Utah has become the first US state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, pushing past opposition from dentists and national health organisations who warn the move will lead to medical problems that disproportionately affect low-income communities. Republican Governor Spencer Cox signed legislation on Thursday barring cities and communities from deciding whether to add the mineral to their water systems. Florida, Ohio and South Carolina are considering similar measures, while in New Hampshire, North Dakota and Tennessee, lawmakers have rejected them. A bill in Kentucky to make fluoridation optional stalled in the state Senate. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump's choice to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, appears before the Senate Finance Commit...

Trump signs executive order to dismantle the US Education Department

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order calling for the dismantling of the federal Education Department, advancing a campaign promise to take apart an agency that's been a longtime target of conservatives. Trump has derided the Education Department as wasteful and polluted by liberal ideology. However, completing its dismantling is most likely impossible without an act of Congress, which created the department in 1979. Republicans said they will introduce a bill to achieve that. The department, however, is not set to close completely. The White House said the department will retain certain critical functions. US President Donald Trump holds up a signed executive order calling for the scrapping of the Education Department at the White House on Thursday...
