Donald Trump named Time’s Person of the Year and rings New York Stock Exchange opening bell

US President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognised for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honours for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump's remarkable comeback from an ostracised former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Before he rang the opening bell at 9.30am (1.30am on Friday AEDT), a first for him, Trump spoke at the exchange and called it "a tremendous honour". Donald Trump named Time's 2024 Person of the Year. Biden commutes about 1500 sentences, pardons 39 people in biggest single-day act of clemency

US President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of about 1500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and is pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It's the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations announced on Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, one in five prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press. Biden said he would be taking more steps in the weeks ahead and would continue to review clemency petitions. The second largest single-day a...

Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous pledges not to

President Joe Biden has pardoned his son, Hunter, sparing the younger Biden a possible prison sentence for federal felony gun and tax convictions and reversing his past promises not to use the extraordinary powers of the presidency for the benefit of his family members. The Democratic president had previously said he would not pardon his son or commute his sentence after his convictions in the two cases in Delaware and California. The move comes weeks before Hunter Biden was set to receive his punishment after his trial conviction in the gun case and guilty plea on tax charges, and less than two months before President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the White House. Elon Musk dealt $155 billion blow by judge over Tesla pay package

Elon Musk's record-breaking pay package for serving as Tesla's CEO was rejected by a Delaware court, despite being approved by Tesla shareholders at a June meeting. The pay package, now worth around $101 billion (approx $AUD155 billion) based on Tesla's closing share price Monday, is made up of 303 million Tesla stock options. It had been previously thrown out in January by the same judge, Delaware Chancery Court Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick. Elon Musk's $155 billion-dollar pay packet has been blocked by a judge. (CNN) The package was worth around $56 billion ($A85 billion) at the time the judge threw out the package. At the time, McCormick ruled in favour of the main shareholder in the suit who challenged the package, arguing that Musk and the Tesla bo...

Elon Musk publicised the names of government employees he wants to cut. It’s terrifying federal workers

When President-elect Donald Trump said Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would recommend major cuts to the federal government in his administration, many public employees knew that their jobs could be on the line. Now they have a new fear: becoming the personal targets of the world's richest man – and his legions of followers. Last week, in the midst of the flurry of his daily missives, Musk reposted two X posts that revealed the names and titles of people holding four relatively obscure climate-related government positions. Donald Trump’s presidential Cabinet picks targeted in bomb threats

Several of US President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks and appointees have been targeted by bomb threats and "swatting attacks," Trump's transition team said this morning. "Last night and this morning, several of President Trump's Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them," Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. She said the attacks "ranged from bomb threats to 'swatting.' In response, law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted. President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their swift action." Several of President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks have been targeted by...
