Police say the incident in an Auckland park where a person made “made a number of concerning comments” has been resolved.
This comes after police evacuated Albert Park and all the streets immediately surrounding the park as a precaution on Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesperson said one person had been taken into custody, and charges were being considered.
They said all the cordons had been lifted and there was no ongoing risk to the public.
At least five police cars could be seen blocking one of the roads near Albert Park at about 1.10 pm on Wednesday.
Armed police were also at the scene.
A university student asked an officer what the threat was.
“It’s not safe,” he said.
“That’s why I’ve got a gun.”
At 2.20 pm, a reporter on the scene said emergency services could be seen packing up and leaving the area.
Auckland University earlier warned its followers on social media about the police incident.
“We will share an update once we have further information. Until then, all staff should avoid the area.”
An email sent to staff said “AUT Security and our Emergency Management leads are aware of an evolving incident in Albert Park, resulting in a large police attendance and road closures.
“The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed, but there is no connection to AUT.”
An Auckland University staff member in its clock tower building said their front door had been locked, with a security guard posted out the front.
“The Science Centre further down Princes Street apparently has an armed guard in front.
“I saw about six cop cars earlier, several armed police officers and dogs, and the park was evacuated by an armed officer about 12:30pm.”
A spokesperson for Tātaki Auckland Unlimited confirmed that police had evacuated staff and visitors from Auckland Art Gallery, and other buildings in Kitchener Street.
The gallery would remain closed for the remainder of the day.
Auckland Transport also warned bus users that due to “an emergency services incident” a number of bus routes had been detoured.
